 On The Edge

She stood at the edge of the jagged cliff shaking. A warm breeze was blowing slightly yet she felt chilled to the bone. She looked out over the horizon and wondered if this was a good day to live or a good day to die. She felt overwhelmed with raw emotion. It was seething out of her pores causing her to feel jittery and off balance. It could just be the fact that she was standing on the edge of this cliff, which seemed so high she felt she could touch the sky, for she was deathly afraid of heights. So many thoughts rambling through her mind all tumbling and jumbled over one another in an effort to be at the forefront of her mind. Flashes of images raced one after another. She saw his face twisted and blood red screaming at her, saw his hard fist bearing down on her, she could hear her screams in her own mind, the way she cried and pleaded with him. She wanted to scream now for the images to stop playing over and over. If only she could freeze the images and make them disappear. If only he hadn't hurt her the way he did. If only she didn't still hear his haunting whispers in her ear, his breath close, taunting her, saying nasty vulgar words to her that she didn't want to hear. If only... yet it had happened and she would bear the scars of his brutality for the rest of her life. However short or long her life was to be.

It had only been three short months ago that she hatched an escape plan and left with the clothes on her back and a few dollars in her pocket. In the wee early morning hours minutes after he drove down the gravel driveway to go to work at the hatchery; she looked around the trailer she had called home one final time before she shut the door and escaped into the cover of darkness. She could imagine how angry he must have been when he discovered her gone. No doubt, he did not even realize she was gone until he got back later that night from drinking at the bar. She was sure he had been livid. And most likely drunk, and that was a dangerous combination. She had first hand experience of that. By then she was out of his clutches, miles and miles away and hopefully they would never cross paths again. At least she hoped she would never have to see his face again. He was no longer in her life yet the fear of what once was still a constant on her mind. Always looking over her shoulder, never giving her real name, never letting anybody get too close just in case he tracked her down. She didn't want anyone to be able to give him any information about her. It was a hell of a life to live. She knew that and she was tired of living in fear. She wouldn't do it anymore.

She brought her attention back to the cliff she was standing on. I wonder how far down it actually is, she thought. She cautiously peered over the edge. It was one hell of a long way down. It made her nervous and she felt her legs tremble just getting close to the edge. She took a few steps back to settle her nerves again. What if she accidentally fell? What did that really matter though, she wouldn't have to make the decision then, it would be done and over with. Would she be able to do it? What if she changed her mind after she took that first step off? It would be too late and there was no turning back then. That's why she had to be sure. If she went through with it and died, it would be a while before anyone would find her body. She could feel the sweat gathering under her pits and running down the crevice of the small of her back. She felt as if every nerve ending was standing up at attention making her pores large and goose-bumpy. She looked around and there was not another soul in sight, which is precisely why she chose this particular spot.

She had found this little piece of heavenly oasis by mistake one afternoon while walking through a forest of trees. She loved walking in the woods and nature seemed to calm her soul. The fresh air and musky scent of the earth allowed her to clear her head. After fighting with prickly brush and thickets of thorns she had stumbled out into an open clearing where the jagged cliff butted out into the clear blue sky. She was taken aback by the beauty of the surroundings and found herself coming here often over the last few weeks. It was her special place, her secret hideout. Often she would sit in the sunshine near the edge of the cliff and mull over her options in life. She even had moments of pure joy when she forgot everything except being right there in that moment. She never felt closer to heaven and wondered what the possibilities for her life were.

She was intelligent and smart no matter what he had told her. She didn't consider herself pretty but she wasn't ugly either, even though he always told her she was, among the other things he called her and said to her. He told her she would be nothing without him. His words echoed through her brain...the things he said that were not true yet after being repeatedly badgered over and over with those messages, she started to believe them. Yeah he really did a number on her, that much was true. She made a decision that it had to end. Today she stopped the madness. Here in this beautiful pristine place, she would rid her soul of being tortured a minute longer. It was the finality of that decision that gave her peace.

She looked around one final time and being sure that nobody was in sight she walked to the edge of the cliff. Well this was it. Without thought she stripped off her clothes. She pulled her thin shirt over her head and eased her shorts off. It felt good standing in the warm air naked and bare with the sun shining down on her body. If she was going to die, this would be the way to do it. No turning back now. She looked down one last time, closed her eyes, then took a deep calming breath. She lifted her eyes towards the heavens, screamed to the top of her lungs and as the last bit of air left her lungs and there was no more air or sound coming from her throat, she stepped off the edge of the cliff.

Her body plunged into the water with a resounding force. The beautiful blue water was ice cold and she felt the shock and then the exhilaration of what she had done. As she broke the surfaced, she screamed with delight and laughed and cried at the same time. She felt the tears flowing out of her eyes and blending in with the fresh spring waters. She dove under water and swam, feeling the cold water flowing over her, surrounding her, healing her, cleansing her, giving birth to her as if she were in Mother Nature's womb. Today was the first day of the rest of her life. She had conquered her fear of heights and this was a new start for her. If she could conquer this one fear, then there was no reason she couldn't face all of her fears. Every last one of them. No longer would she be living in the shadows of what once was. Plunging into the deep blue waters was a symbolic rebirth of her life and what it could be in the future.

As she swam to the shore's edge to make her way up the path she had plotted out in the last several weeks, she knew in her heart that she would be changed from this day forward. With a contented sigh and a smile on her face, she started the climb up the side of the cliff.

 The Black Fedora

The Black Fedora

Jimmy left the bar around midnight deciding he should probably walk home to sober up a bit. It wasn't that he was wasted or anything, he just had a good buzz going on and thought the fresh air would do him good. It was a cool crisp night but not so chilly that you needed a heavier coat yet. He zipped up his faded jean jacket and headed towards the park.

He lived about a half a mile away from the old tavern, a place he was well familiar with, as he frequented the watering hole in the wall at least several times a week quenching his thirst with firewater, otherwise known as bourbon. Just like his Daddy did for many years until he died, though there was a major difference between him and his father. Jimmy wasn't a raging drunk like his old man had been. Jimmy didn't get his kicks out of knocking women around and he vowed he would be nothing like his father.

Cutting through the deserted community park would get him home in half the time. Nobody was ever there at this time of night so it was peaceful and he enjoyed the familiar park often. He had walked this route many times from the tavern and knew the area well. He had grown up and lived here all his life. In fact he lived in the same house he had grown up in. After his father's death he moved back home and was trying to renovate it a bit. His old man had let the place run down so much that it was in shambles but Jimmy was working on fixing up the place in his spare time.

Jimmy looked up and noticed the moon was full tonight lending an eerie cast over the shadows of the trees as he neared the entrance to the park. There was a walking trail he would pick up that led back into a wooded section which butted up against a row of houses where Jimmy lived two streets over. Kids used the shortcut often as did a lot of the neighbors. Jimmy looked around and didn't see another soul in sight. Sometimes under-aged kids would hang out and drink but since it was so close to Halloween, he figured they had better things to get into. He remembered when he was a kid how him and his buddies were always getting into mischief especially around Halloween. Graveyards and party crashing were always top of the list.

The wind picked up a bit and sent a chill down his neck. His buzz made him feel a bit more inebriated than he really was. Maybe it was the cool air that hit him. Sometimes it did that to you. You feel fine leaving the bar then Whamoo! You feel drunker than you should for the drinks you consumed. Oh well, he didn't have too far to go.

He spotted a bench up ahead and decided he would sit for a few minutes. It wasn't like anyone was waiting for him at home. He lived alone and didn't date. Not that he wouldn't like to, it was just that he didn't take the time or the effort it required to court a woman. Besides, whenever he had need for one, he didn't have any trouble finding one to keep him company for a few hours. That was just fine with him.

He approached the park bench and eased himself down to take a load off. Maybe he had more to drink than he thought. He rubbed his face and eyes and looked around. Why was that tree moving? He did a double take. No, the tree wasn't moving except for the wind moving the branches. It must be me he thought. He could have sworn that he only had about six drinks. Maybe somebody spiked my drink he thought. No, why would anyone do that to me? I didn't even talk to anyone at the bar except ole Riley who owned The Rusty Nail Tavern and poured the drinks. A cold gust of air slammed him in the face and he wondered if a storm was brewing up tonight.

He noticed something black moving within his eyesight close to the ground. What the heck was that? A black cat? No... too close to the ground and smaller than a cat. He made his blurry eyes focus as he watched it scoot and tumble closer and finally it came to rest at his feet. He looked down at it. It was a hat. A black fedora hat. It must have blown off of somebody's head in this wind. He reached down and picked it up. He had never owned a hat like this and in fact most of his hats were ball caps. He looked up again and scanned the park to see if anyone was around. It was unlikely that somebody would be chasing after their hat at this time of night.

He held the hat in his hand and inspected the fedora. It was a perfectly fine hat, looked brand new in fact. Somebody probably paid a pretty penny for it. Well it was their loss now, he thought and he decided to keep the hat for himself.

"Well, now.." he said to himself out loud, "Let's try it on for size." He took the hat and adjusted the brim a bit and sat it on top of his head. He sat up a bit straighter, smiled and he even felt better wearing his new hat. In fact his head had cleared remarkably.

He convinced himself that it must have been the fresh night air that had cleared the bourbon fog from his head. Jimmy felt so good in fact that he decided he would not call it a night after all. The eve was still young so he might as well live it up.

He lifted himself off the park bench and with a spring in his step he decided to visit a little hot spot called The Martini Glass which he had frequented on occasion. It was known for being an upscale strip bar and casino. The girls there were higher grade than most of the other strip joints he had been to and even though he didn't have a lot of money to gamble away, he could spare a few greenbacks for the slots and blackjack table. With his new hat he was feeling lucky so he wasted no time trekking across town to the crowded gentleman's club.

Three hours later Jimmy found himself on a winning streak. He had won $500 big ones and had settled himself in a private backroom with a buxom blond lap dancer named Ginger. She was working him for all he was worth since she knew he had scored at blackjack. He slipped her a crisp fifty dollar bill and sat back to enjoy her eagerness and enthusiasm to please him in order to get more of the same. She gyrated and ground herself into him to the beat of the sensual music and felt his heated response to her moves and well toned body. Jimmy struggled to maintain his cool exterior. His mind was churning with all that he wanted to really do to her.

But there were rules he had to follow here. No touching allowed unless you were depositing more money in the lacy strap of her white satin G string. When she finished he gave her another fifty and whispered in her ear "There's two hundred more for you if you leave with me right now."

Ginger wanted the money, but she also knew the boss man would be very unhappy if she left the club with him. The owner of the club instructed all his girls to get as much money back as they could by doing their dances and getting guys to buy them overpriced drinks but he had strict rules that they were not to take any moves further than the dances allowed on the club's time. He had no qualms about what they did on their own time, but on his dime there was no way he wanted to be shut down for prostitution, after all this was a high class joint and they wanted to keep it that way.

She softy said, "You know the rules... I can't... She started to protest and tell him she got off in another hour but Jimmy grabbed her by the arm.

"Come on you bitch tease, what's wrong with you? Or are you too good for a low life like me?" he spat. He didn't know what came over him because just minutes before he felt on top of the world. But still he tightened his grip on her.

Ginger struggled to get loose from his hand. "Let go of me, you're hurting my arm." she pleaded. She had not expected him to get upset as he knew the rules of the club. In fact he had been in here before and she never had any problems with him in the past.

Almost immediately a bald man appeared in the doorway. "Is there a problem in here?" a burly oversized bouncer asked as he glared daggers at Jimmy.

There was no question he could haul Jimmy out of there with one arm tied behind his back, as he had done it too many times to count when anyone got out of line. There must be cameras all over this place watching everyone like a hawk, Jimmy thought.

Jimmy glared back even though the man was twice his size. "Why don't you mind your own business Curly." he challenged back.

Jimmy was edging for a fight and he thought about the knife in his pocket. I could poke this porker and watch him bleed out, he thought to himself. He had never been this challenging in his life and for once it felt good. He was tired of being shoved around and stomped on so if he had to fight to the death he would enjoy watching them suffer and die.

"I suggest you leave the premises now on your own accord before I throw your ass out." the bouncer coolly replied.

Ginger who had edged away when Jimmy loosened his hand in the confrontation with Earl started towards the door. She needed to get back out on the floor and away from this situation. She hated when things turned ugly and usually it was with the drunks, but Jimmy didn't appear to be drunk at all.

"We're not done here... " Jimmy started to say as he made a move towards Ginger, however Earl stepped in front of him blocking his way as the blond slipped out the door.

"Oh you are done alright." the bouncer said standing over the smaller man and looking down at him. "I suggest you get out now while you can before you get hurt."

Jimmy laughed and mumbled something under his breath as he gave the bouncer a once over and walked out the door. You’ll get what’s coming to you Buddy…he thought as he left the premises.

He loitered around outside for a bit and then decided to wait it out. He made a beeline for the side alley which was adjacent to the club, where he knew all the dancers and waitresses entered and exited the building.

Jimmy waited patiently leaning up against the wall in the alley by the side door that led to The Martini Glass. He knew Ginger would be coming out of that door once her shift ended. He felt the anger rising in him hot and raw like a possession coursing through his blood.

He would take care of the bouncer all in good time but right now his focus was on the blond dancer. He wanted to show her a thing or two as she needed a good lesson and he was just the one to teach her.

He adjusted his hat atop his head and felt like he could take on the world. He thought about all the times somebody had cheated him and tried to stomp him down. He'd show them all. He was tired of being a doormat for others to walk all over.

Good thing his ole man was dead already or he would have likely gone home and killed him for wasting the same air that Jimmy breathed. His father was a dirty rotten miserable excuse for a human being. He remembered back to the time when he had been beaten severely as a young boy when he tried to intervene because his father was knocking his mother senseless. His mother never told anyone about the beatings and she didn’t dare try to stop him from beating Jimmy either.

She knew better because he would have killed her. His mother just kept quite and never told a soul how awful Jimmy’s father was to her. Neither did all the women that his father had bedded right under the nose of his devoted mother. Maybe that was what made Jimmy madder than anything. That nobody had ever stood up to his father so the insanity had continued until his father was dead and buried in the ground.

The opening door of the club brought Jimmy back to reality. A couple other dancers came out and walked briskly to their parked cars chattering all the while about their aching feet and how glad they were that their shift was over. He waited and watched for the blond to appear and it was moments later that she exited the side door.

He spotted the object of his desire and started briskly walking towards her. She was focused on digging the keys out of her purse and she didn't see Jimmy until the very last second when she looked up at the approaching shadow blocking the street light.

"Oh! You started me!" she exclaimed. She recognized him instantly and gave a brief half smile. She thought maybe he was waiting to apologize for his actions earlier that night, because he had always been okay any other time he had come to the club, however the look in his eye made a chill go down her spine. She looked back towards the closed door and realized she didn't have the protection of the bouncer out here in the back alley. She started to say something but hesitated.

Jimmy reached out and stroked her cheek. She flinched and the fear in her eyes made the blood in his veins boil. He grabbed her and pulled her close to him making her drop her purse with the sudden jolt. Jimmy pressed his dry lips into hers and felt her tighten up and start to resist. He held her firm with his grip as she tried to push him away.

"Stop it!" she managed to get out in a gasp of air. "Let go of me or else I am going to scream!" she struggled in his tight hands that were in a death grip around her waist.

"You owe me bitch!" he spat as he held her against her will and ground himself into her. He wanted her and he was not going to take no for an answer. He was too far over the edge and he planned to get what he wanted even if she wasn't willing. She was struggling hard and nearly to the point of tears.

"I don't owe you anything and if you don't let go of me... I'll...." she screamed at him as she hit him with her clenched fists.

"You'll what?" he challenged. She started to scream until he clasp a hand over her mouth and she bit him hard which drew blood and only served to make him angrier. He was tempted to backhand her but instead he grabbed her by the throat, wrapping both hands around her windpipe and started choking her.

She fought for her life as the air was closing in tighter and tighter and her world threatened to go black and distant. She glanced up into his eyes and didn't even recognize him anymore. He had turned into some demented monster that was very likely going to kill her within minutes if he didn't let go.

Jimmy looked down into her eyes and although he heard the words Kill her, Kill her... in his head, there was something within him that clicked when he saw the fear in her bulging eyes and he realized it was because of him.

It sickened and shocked him that it was actually his own hands around her throat. The shock and horror of the realization made him loosen his grip and she dropped to the ground like a sack of potatoes, clutching her throat coughing and gasping for air.

He saw her lying there on the pavement and he stepped back... "I'm ... sorry.. " he croaked. "I don't know what came over me...." he tried to explain as he tried to make sense of it himself.

She reached for her purse and gathered the spilled contents scattered all over the ground looking for a weapon in case he attacked again. He was sure she was going to mace him or worse grab a gun and shoot him.

Jimmy was the one who became frightened now as he heard the screaming in his head telling him what an idiot he was. He turned to run and tried to block out the strange voices in his head.

He ran as fast as he could out of the alley and headed for bridge that led back through the park. He ran hard as he could into the blackened night as he tried to escape the screaming in his ears and head that only he could hear. He wanted the ugly words to stop. He kept hearing his father's voice telling him how stupid he was for not finishing off the job and how he was just like his old man and he wasn't any better. "It's in your blood son... a chip off the ole block."

"No!" he screamed. "I'll never be like you!"

"But you already are dear boy... you should have killed that woman when you had the chance, Jimmy...." The voice of his father taunted. "You have to put women in their place or they'll run right over you and start thinking they can tell you what to do. A real man won't put up with that."

"You were never a real man the way you beat Mama and all those other women. I would rather die first before becoming anything like you!" Jimmy screamed into the night air. If anyone would have seen him, they would have pegged him for a mad man screaming to spirits of the night. His clothes were all disheveled and he was sweating profusely.

He was at the foot of the bridge and the murky water below was calling to him as tears and sweat streamed down his face. He stood there torn between the voices in his head and the beckoning choppy water shimmering in the moonlight.

"Go ahead... jump. The police are going to come and get you anyway so you might as well end it now. Your life is over."

Jimmy covered his ears to shut out his father's raspy voice as he neared the edge of the rail. His father was right. He was going to be in serious trouble for nearly strangling that woman. What did he have to live for anyway? A miserable job and a lonely existence? A house that was empty and haunted by his father's legacy. What did he truly have to live for anyway? His actions tonight made him wonder if he really was turning out to be just like his father, a miserable alcoholic and abuser.

"Jump... do the world a favor and end your miserable sorry life. Do it!" the voice taunted urging him on. "JUMP!" it screamed at him.

Jimmy climbed up on the rail and teetered there precariously. Was this truly the end? His mind raced back to the events of the night as the voices became louder and louder and more jumbled. He heard his mother's screams, her face bruised and bloodied, he saw Ginger's bulging eyes with his own hands around her throat. His saw his father's demented face dancing in front of him wicked and evil, calling him gutless and a loser.

He reached up to wipe the sweat from his brow and take that final step. He felt the hat sitting snugly on his head and touched his fingertips to it. The voices screamed and drowned out all thoughts. "JUMP! DO IT NOW!"

It was torturous in the last few seconds before he was going to step off the rail. He tried to gain some clarity and get some air into his constricted dry throat. He suddenly whipped around to take a final look at the cruel world before he leap to his death when the wind tipped the hat slightly off his head.

In that moment something amazing happened. All the voices in his head stopped in an instant and it was eerily quiet. He at once felt the cool night breeze blowing and caressing his face. For a moment he didn't realize where he was. Then it all came flooding back to him and he jerked the hat off of his head.

He looked at the hat in his hand. It was the hat! He thought. There's something evil about this hat! He climbed down from the rail and stared in disbelief at the black fedora. He had nearly killed himself and another human being because of this hideous atrocity.

“Oh my God…” he said aloud although nobody was there to hear him. What the hell had he done to that poor woman he thought to himself. Some way, some how he would go back to her and make it right and tell her…explain to her that it wasn’t him. That he was out of his mind because of the hat.

No… she will never believe me, he said to himself. I’ll just have to make her understand and that I would never do that… it isn’t who I am. I am not my father. If he had to turn himself in to the police he would. He would take his punishment like a man.

He glanced down once again at the black hat in his hand. He didn’t want to even touch it anymore as if holding it would somehow seep evil power into his body and possess him again. There was no way he was going to keep it. He looked out over the water, jerked back his hand and flung the hat out over the water as far as it would go. He watched it descend into the black murky water and disappear.

He turned away from the bridge and slowly started walking home. If he had thought about it enough, he would have thought to burn the damn hat and watch it disintegrate into ashes, destroying it completely.

But he hadn’t thought of that at all as he walked home alone in the wee hours of the morning and finally arriving upon his doorstep, he unlocked the door to the home his father had once owned. He didn’t even turn the lights on, but went to bed exhausted and spent.

How was he to know that at six thirty that morning a bright and early eager fisherman would snag his fishing line on something and reel it in only to discover it wasn’t a fish at all but a new looking black fedora hat.

 A Halloween Tale...

A Halloween Tale

Twas the night before all Hallow’s Eve when the goblins and ghosts fly through the air… their spirits searching for something frightening and something to scare.

All the little children excited in the anticipation of getting the mother load in candy and treats to fill their oversized knapsacks and their colorful plastic pumpkins as they walk the darkened streets of gloom and doom. Made up in their colorful costumes they imitate witches, Ninjas, pop stars and various scary monsters, goblins and walking dead zombies. They giggle in delight as they go from door to door as they call out the frequent resounding demand into the night air- “Trick or Treat?”, Not knowing of the dangers or what lurks behind each door while they await their sugary sweet treats.

Hardly ever is it a trick but always something yummy to eat like homemade popcorn balls,  chocolate covered confections or other sappy overdosed sugar treats or perhaps if lucky, a coin or two is tossed into their orange round pails... That is…until they reach the old haunted gray stone mansion that sits on the corner of Elm Street.

No… the children don’t dare to go up to those steps and knock on the darkened doorway that is framed by two flickering candles and imposing statues of twin gargoyles.  It was said that the old place was haunted and the old woman who lived there was an unhappy dead soul who took her misery out on everyone she crossed paths with.

Her name was Isabella Pruette and she was guessed to be in her late nineties although nobody ever knew for sure her true age. It was rumored that she was an unwed maiden for all those miserable years because her one true love had been killed in a tragic accident that took his life and her happiness along with it on what was to be their blissful wedding day. That tragic day turned acrid cold and sour like bile rising up in your throat as Isabella vowed she would never take another love for the rest of her living days. And So she lived in the old gray mansion alone for years and years with it’s creaking doors and the mystique of all things wicked that go bump in the night alone in her misery.

Years ago, after the accident, neighbors would try to coax her out to befriend her, yet there was something not quite right about her and eventually even they got spooked by her odd behavior and gave up trying.  Brave neighborhood teenagers would aggravate her on dares by ringing her doorbell and then they would run and hide to try to get a glimpse of her wrinkled up old body as she opened the heavy wooden door. They would try to peer in the windows at night to get a look inside but the windows were always smoked over with years of dust and grime and cobwebs.

Nobody had ever crossed the threshold of her door so nobody truly knew what the inside looked like. They only had their imaginations of plastic covered dust ridden furniture and rats and mice that scampered about the old woman’s feet. Some thought her to be an evil witch who cast horrible spells and curses upon the town when anything went wrong. She was sure to be the blame as they would exclaim, “It must be that old witch Pruette again, up to her tricks!” they would say and shake their heads at how strange and awful she must be, if only in their own minds.

On this particular Halloween night, it started out as it usually did year after year, with the children starting to come out and gather on the sidewalks in their various made-up garb, some cute, some funny and some downright scary, walking along the streets and ringing doorbells. However this year there was something different and out of place that occurred. At first, you couldn’t put your finger on it and then passerby’s walking along the street noticed something different about the old haunted mansion. They stopped and stared for a moment before quickly moving on.

There were faint lights flickering inside behinds the smoke windows and the porch was lit up bright with a jack-o lantern smiling a wicked smile sitting there perched on the stoop. What did this mean they wondered? Did old woman Pruette actually think children would dare walk up to her front door and if they did what could they expect?

Surely not a treat and if it was, would they dare eat it or would it be taken away by concerned parents to inspect it for signs of poison?

What tricks was old Pruette up to this time, they pondered as they held the hands of their small innocent children a bit tighter and kept their eyes alert as if she would reach out and snatch them right up with her gnarled hands and wicked cackling laughter and hisses.

This new development had definitely not gone unnoticed by a young lad named Jason who hurried over to greet his three buddies at the usual meeting place which was the local pizzeria. The boys had planned to create some Halloween havoc and then go camp out overnight in Jason’s backyard. The group of teenagers was a bit older at 15 and 16 to be out trick or treating, but that did not mean that they would not get into any mischief.

In fact Jason and his friends had on many occasions been the very ones to ring the doorbell of the old woman’s place and run like hell laughing and cracking jokes at her expense. They yelled and taunted her about how dried up she must be and that she probably farted dust because she was so old.

As Jason caught sight of his pals he approached them and called out. “You guys are not going to believe what I just saw.” He said.

“What? A ghost?” The one named Billy cracked up at his own joke. The other two boys chuckled along too.

“No. Get a load of this. The old hag’s place is lit up and she has a carved pumpkin on her porch. Like anyone is going to want stale mildewed candy from that ole dust bag.” He said smiling as his thoughts turned to something a bit devilish.

The other boys sat up at attention as a grin came across Jason’s face and they waited to hear what he had to say. They knew it had to be good considering he was smiling like a sly black cat.

“I think we should pay a visit to ole Pruette and smash that pumpkin to smithereens.” He laughed. “I mean after all what is she going do, chase us?”

He glanced over at the boys to see if they would go along with his idea and of course they all lit up like demented little jack o lanterns with evil grins in agreement.

It was a great plan to start the night off, and then they would creep through the streets and scare unsuspecting little kids and then finally take a midnight dash through the local graveyard before settling in the pup-tent at Jason’s house to tell ghost stories to one another to try to scare one another silly before they drifted off to sleep in the wee hours of the morning.

So off the four boys went not knowing what was awaiting them. It was Halloween, and you just never know what could happen on a night such as this. After all, the darkening sky held a bright full moon and the ghosts and goblins have been released from their cages to rattle and shake old bones around on this night of All Saints Day.

If only somebody would have warned them… but alas, some lessons have to be experienced the hard way and these boys were no exception.

Chad and Zach walked along together in front as Jason and Billy trailed behind pushing and shoving each other with horseplay as boys typically do. The two in front looked back and gave a signal to the others to run and hide behind some bushes as they saw a group of younger kids without parental supervision turn the corner up ahead them. The boys pulled out gruesome masks from their back pockets and slid them over their faces.

As the youngsters drawled near to them, Billy let out with a loud squawk of an owl hooting. That was their signal that it was almost time to pounce upon their unsuspecting victims.

The smaller children were laughing and skipping along unaware of the foursome hiding in the bushes when all of the sudden Chad and Billy jumped out screaming bloody murder to the top of their lungs in front of the group of terrified children who were now also screaming and making an effort to turn back towards the way they came.

Jason and Zach jumped out from the other side of the bushes to block their path and attempts to run, and in the scariest deep voice Jason could muster he told them to hand over their candy or he would turn them into werewolves. The frightened children screamed and dropped their plastic pumpkins and ran as fast as they could in their escape while the four boys fell on the grass laughing and hee-hawing at the looks on the little scared faces.

“Man, that was classic! Did you see the whites of their bulging eyes as they ran off?” Jason asked as he pulled off the mask and walked over to the fallen candy containers. Not much was in there yet but the four boys divvied up what was there and filled their pockets before kicking the colorful orange round faces out into the street.

They were still laughing as they rounded the corner and approached Elm Street where the old mansion stood on the corner, set back into a small grove of hovering dark trees. The night moon glow and the shadows made the old place look more haunted than everyone already suspected it to be.

Sure enough as Jason had told them, there on the porch sat a huge carved Jack O Lantern face smiling wickedly at them, beckoning them to come closer. If one looked carefully, they would have sworn the pumpkin was alive and laughing at the foolish young lads.

It only took a few moments and the four boys found themselves creeping up the ancient cement steps as the other Halloween goers passed on by quickly not daring to stop for a treat or a trick.

Chad was the first one to reach the steps of the porch. He looked back at the others and put his finger to his lips in an effort to quiet them. They noticed faint glow of lights dancing in the windows as if someone was inside walking about and they all heard the faint whispers of what sounded like music drifting from inside the great stone walls.

Jason motioned for them to quietly and cautiously approach the smiling glowing orb and lift it from its perch. It was bigger and heavier than they expected so Zach had to help Billy lift it. If they could get it down the steps without being caught, then the four of them would be able to hoist the huge pumpkin up in the air and throw it back onto the front porch steps effectively smashing it and leaving a mushy mess of orange guts.

Just as the boys positioned themselves to move and lift the heavy Jack O Lantern, they heard an odd noise and a creek that caused them to turn their heads toward the heavy wooden door. It was opening and as if it was in dreamlike mystic slow motion, the door opened all the way and there stood a beautiful young blond haired beauty staring back at them.

This was not what they expected at all and for a moment the four boys stood there in silence still holding onto the pumpkin. The girl was the first to break the silence.

“How thoughtful of you to move old Jack to a much better place where he will be seen from the street.” She said in a smooth silky voice that dripped with raw honey.

Jason was caught off guard by her radiance as she stepped out from the frame of the door and onto the porch with the foursome. She was definitely a looker with long golden curls cascading over her shoulders and her mesmerizing green eyes that twinkled in the moon’s glow.

She was wearing a long burgundy velvet sort of dress that flowed and came down around her delicate ankles where they could see the sparkle of silver jewelry adorning her small pedicured feet which were covered in black lace up pumps.

“Ummm, we were just about to ask you where you wanted us to set it.” Zach stammered, caught up in her beauty also. He glanced over at Billy who also had his eyes glued on the young girl who appeared to be around the same age as them.

“You fine young men can set it right here at the top of the steps and then I will invite you in to repay you for your kindness.” She said as she looked at each of them for a moment or two. “The wind is beginning to pick up and it is warm and toasty inside by the fire.”

Did they hear her right? She was going to invite them inside the walls of the haunted mansion. Trepidation lingered in their stomachs for only but a second before curiosity won out and it was decided by a glance and nod of agreement that all four boys were willing to take the chance to get a good look inside.

This was actually better than they could have planned and they would be the envy of their classmates when they told them they had actually been inside the forbidden haunted mansion on Halloween night.

In a blink of a eye, Chad, Billy, Zach, and Jason found themselves escorted inside and heard the thud of the heavy wooden door closing behind them as their eyes took in the sights and sounds around them.

Billy spoke up as he gawked at the surroundings. “I thought an old lady lived here alone, so who are you?” He asked the young girl.

“Oh yes, that is indeed true…she is my aunt who is not feeling very well at the moment, I’m afraid she has come down with some sort of nasty bug and cannot join us tonight. I am Bella, her niece and namesake.”

She smiled at them. “I am only passing through for a couple of days before I travel on to be with my oldest sister who lives in Transylvania.”

“As in Transylvania where the vampires live?” asked Zach right before Jason elbowed him in the ribs.

“Everybody knows there’s no such thing as real vampires, Stupid.” Jason gaffed as he rolled his eyes at his friend who was standing there with a whaddid I do look on his face.

“Actually, there are real vampires in this world, however…” she said with a smile, “They do not live in Transylvania where my sister lives.”

The boys just stood there looking at her trying to decide if she was pulling their leg or not. Chad whispered to Billy, “There ain’t really vampires, are there?” His friend shrugged a I dunno look and glanced back at the mysterious beautiful girl.

She motioned for them to follow and led them into a huge dining hall where a rather large oak table was the highlight and center of the room which was filled with all kinds of delectable treats and drink offerings.

“May I get you something to drink or invite you to help yourselves to anything you chose?” She asked as she pointed to the feast laid out before them.

For a moment the boys wondered if they should dare eat anything, for all they knew it could be poison, however, when Bella herself reached over and started munching on some of the fruits and whipped cream confections, they simply could not resist.

Jason went first as he was usually the leader of the pack as he filled a small china plate with all kinds of goodies. The rest of the boys followed his lead and soon they were all in divine heaven tasting and sampling things they had never even heard of before. Pastries and crème filled deserts and apple ciders and homemade root beers topped the list along with several assortments of candy concoctions in white and dark chocolates and raspberry cream.

She led them back into the parlor to sit and enjoy the food and to listen to the soft enchanting music that was playing in the background. She seemed pleased that they were her companions for the evening and she smiled a sweet smile to each of them which set their pulses racing because she was so different and prettier than anyone they had ever encountered. None of the girls at school compared to beautiful Bella.

The rooms were filled with soft mystic light and everything was in the style of old Victorian furnishings that looked elegant and expensive. Not that that mattered to any of the boys but nobody would have ever believed it was so nice and clean behind the dreary imposing stone walls. It was almost like being in another world that they had only read about in history books.

“Wow. Your aunt must be loaded to have all this cool stuff in here.” Zach commented as he continued to scan and take in every detail of this place and the girl sitting across from them.

“Yes, our family comes from great wealth but poor aunty never does anything with her money except live inside these walls. She does not get out much since the accident, you know…” Bella explained and briefly gave them the tragic story of how Isabella Pruette’s one true love had died on the day that was supposed to be the happiest day of her life.

“Sad really, when you think of it.” She sighed as she watched them with a steady eye.

The boys eyed one another and started to make their usual jokes but thought better of it since this was the old woman’s niece they were talking to.

Chad asked if he could use the bathroom as he had drank more than his share of the ice cold root beer. Bella arose and said “Of course.” As she led him back through a hallway while the other three boys waited.

Chad followed Bella towards the back of the huge house which seemed to be almost like a maze with twists and turns to the corridors. When they arrived at a brightly lit bathroom Bella stepped aside and said “I think you will find this satisfactory to your liking since you will be in here for a while.”

He turned to asked her what she meant but all he saw was a green mist and he felt very sleepy all of the sudden. He turned back to look at the room he was in and thought he saw a very huge lizard peeking out from the shower curtain. It’s tongue was bigger than his whole head and he wanted to yell out to his friends to tell them something was not right but it was too late.

He sank to his knees and was drifting to sleep on the cold hard porcelain floor. He caught something in his field of vision and lifted his head as the door closed and locked from the outside. Before his eyes finally closed in deep sleep he could have sworn he saw the vision of the old woman’s face before him laughing and smiling with her jagged rotting teeth bared.

Bella returned to the parlor a few moments later and asked if the other boys wanted to dance. Of course they did and the remaining three forgot about their friend as each wanted to hold the beautiful girl close to them to breathe in her enticing scent. After all they were red blooded boys and the beautiful girl called to their attention more than the little warning signs going off in their little stubborn heads.

Laughter and gaiety filled the walls of the rooms as the music played on and they danced and became more intoxicated by the lovely Bella. She flirted and swayed in front of them and soon they all became tired as if they were in a drunk like state.

Zach finally noticed that Chad had never returned and he said maybe he should check on him to see if he had fallen in the toilet or something.

Billy and Jason laughed at the thought of that as Bella told Zach how to get back to the restroom facilities to check on his buddy. She excused herself to go freshen up too and told Jason and Billy she would return in a moment.

Zach wondered along the back of the hallway and although it seemed to be a simple straight and narrow path where he could see light under the doorway where Chad supposedly was, he somehow got lost and made a wrong turn and ended up in a huge barren kitchen. He stopped to get his bearings and as he turned Bella was standing before him which gave him an odd feeling in the pit of his stomach.

“Are you lost little one?” she seemed to cackle and laugh at his confusion. He seemed disoriented and wondered if the food they ate had indeed been drugged, but before he could say anything he saw the flick of something in her hand and powder blown in his face.

Now he really was feeling quite odd and in an instant he felt something very different within himself and he became very dizzy. He tried to say something, but all that would come out was a croak.

Bella reached down and picked up the green fat toad from the floor and petted him. “Oh, poor baby Zach…. I think I will keep you in a jar for safe keeping for now. She laughed as she reached into the pantry and retrieved a large Mason jar and promptly plopped the frog into it before closing the lid tight and setting it on the shelf among other horrid things that were dried up and smelling of stench all sealed in various size jars along the shelf.

She smiled to herself as she set off to return to her two remaining guests. Soon she would have all four right where she wanted them.

Jason and Billy were wondering what was taking Chad and Zach so long when Bella appeared in the door frame as if on queue. “Your friends seemed to not be feeling too well at the moment. Perhaps they ate too much candy that made their tummy hurt.” She said in a soothing hypnotic voice. “I showed them to one of the guest rooms so they can rest for a moment or two.”

She smiled delightfully at them and said, “Well, we can continue to visit and you can entertain me.”

Billy started to protest and say that maybe they should all just go if their friends were sick but Jason hushed him and said “Well, we can stay just a little bit longer… after all Billy we don’t want to leave Bella here all alone on a night like this.” He reasoned.

Billy settled down and watched Jason moving in on Bella to get closer to her. So that was the gig he thought to himself. Jason wanted to have Bella all to himself so he could try to score with her. For a moment, Billy felt a pang of anger overcome him at Jason who always seems to want to control everything the group did.

As soon as he felt the anger rising he noticed Bella looking at him strangely and then she smiled an odd sort of smile and he thought he caught something in her eyes that did not seem right.

Actually Billy was sensing that maybe something was terribly wrong and they really needed to get out of here before it was too late. Bella spoke up and broke his train of thought. She asked him if he would like to see a rare sword collection and check out several suits of armor that his aunt collected over the years. Since he was indeed a medieval buff, somehow he could not resist saying yes that he would very much like to see it.

Jason smiled and nodded that yes he thought that was a good idea too and it would give him the opportunity to spend a little time alone with Bella.

Bella told Jason she would be right back and she led Billy up the stairs while Jason hung back and sat waiting on the loveseat for Bella to return.

At the top of the stairs, Bella showed Billy into a grand library which held all kinds of magnificent medieval swords and shields from long ago that had seen many battles. He was impressed and intrigued at the same time. He walked over and stood in front of a huge oil painting of a knight in shining armor who looked vaguely familiar. He turned to ask her who it was.

Bella said “Why don’t you find out yourself?” and as Billy turned to ask her what she meant he found himself actually in the portrait looking at Bella standing there smiling and he saw that she was ugly and not the beauty that they had thought she was moments ago.

He tried to speak but found that he couldn’t. He could only stand there frozen in time as he was caught in the stance pose in the framed portrait. He watched helplessly as Bella walked out of the room and quietly closed the door.

Jason was wondering what was taking so long as he started to go up the stairs after Billy and Bella. He thought for a moment that it was odd that he could not hear any sounds of his friends but as the thoughts crossed his mind he looked up and there was Bella coming down the grand staircase more beautiful than ever.

He did not know how he managed to get time alone with her but all other thoughts ceased as he took her hand and led her back to the parlor’s loveseat in front of the fireplace.

In an instant Bella was in his arms as he breathed in her intoxicating perfume scent and he became even more enamored with her. She stopped him but only for a moment and asked him if he had good intentions to which he would have replied anything she wanted to hear at that precise moment.

If only she would let his lips touch hers so he could taste her sweet divine lips and let him hold her close enough to be lucky enough to maybe cop a feel. After all he was a teenager with raging hormones and he could not believe his luck at having a chance with this beautiful girl.

She looked him in the eyes and told him that she had been saving her purity but she was rather attracted to him and that if he could promise everlasting love to her, she would let him kiss her and even do much more on this special night.

Jason nodded yes and even though he knew there was a chance he would never see her again nor did he know all about that love stuff she was talking about, he was not about to pass this opportunity up. He would have said anything she wanted to hear just to kiss and touch her.

This was indeed a special night of magic and he felt the electricity in the air. His skin felt electrifying like it was going to pop off. This was way better than anything him and his buddies could have planned or hoped for.

Bella unzipped her velvet dress and let it slip off to the floor as she stood before him. To a sixteen year old with raging hormones, this was Utopia for Jason as he watched her slow movements and he reached up for her. She let him take her by the hand and pull her to the couch underneath him and as he tried to kiss her.

Within moments she became the aggressor and rolled so that he was on the bottom and she was holding his wrists above him as to trap and hold him down. She knew what he wanted and she was going to give it to him alright. After all she had been waiting for this precise moment for quiet a while now.

Finally she brought her face closer and closer to his, teasing and nipping at his lips until she thought he could not take it a moment more. Jason lifted his head and the moment his lips made full contact with hers he felt a lightening bolt jolt him. He thought it was the magnitude of the kiss that he was getting into but he noticed something rather strange and he felt a dryness overcome his mouth as he continued to kiss Bella.

He opened his eyes and in that instant he screamed pure terror at the top of his lungs for what he saw was the face of an old shriveled up woman who was holding him down and he saw her rotting cracked lips and the stench of her nasty foul breath overcame him. He tried to get up but she was too strong.

She laughed and cackled in his face and said in a voice that turned his blood cold, “I knew one day I would be able to pay you back for torturing me all these years” she spat.

He thought he was going to vomit from the terror he felt as she blew a big puff of dust in his face. She smiled wickedly and said, “You think you are so brave yet here you are nearly peeing your pants because you are nothing but a frightened little boy. You and your pals were such easy targets for my revenge. It’s people like you that killed my beloved and I vow to pay you all back in good time.” She said as she bent down to give him one last kiss before he passed out.

The bells of the Town Hall clock struck midnight as the chiming sound was heard throughout the city. It meant that Halloween was officially over and all the little children were hopefully snug in their beds, their bellies filled with too much candy and they had a sugar high that would last throughout the following weeks to come.

So…. I guess you are wondering what became of our fearsome foursome who decided to play a mean spirited prank on an innocent old lady?

With malice and mischievousness in their hearts…

Well our boys Jason, Chad, Billy and Zach found themselves inside of the pup tent in Jason’s backyard. They awoke at the sound of midnight and for a moment they each sat up and looked at one another as if to question what the hell had happened tonight. However none of them uttered one word as they lay their heads back down and stared into the darkness as their thoughts overtook them. Was it fear? Was it a spell?

Maybe it was all a dream, but if so, why in the heck couldn’t they remember what else they did that night. Had they even made it to the graveyard? Maybe at this point it didn’t really matter so each of them just laid there until the wee hours of the morning before they could find a moment of peaceful sleep.

The next morning, after a quiet solemn breakfast, Jason offered to walk his buddies’ home as they typically did when they had overnight campouts. The four boys packed up their gear and headed off on the well worn path towards their own homes. Along the way they passed the old gray mansion and for a slight moment they all saw the parting of the curtains at the second floor window which caught their attention.

It was no mistaking that they all caught a glimpse of a beautiful young girl with blond hair standing at the window before she faded back and they each wondered if they had seen anything at all.

None of the boys would talk about that night ever again nor would they ever dare step one foot on the property of the huge gray stone mansion on Elm Street

Especially on Halloween Night.

Watching You – Part 4

“But how….. Where are…. I…I am at a loss. I don’t know where to start. I have so many questions…” Maggie stammered. She was amazed and enthralled with trying to take everything in at once.

She looked up into the trees where the leaves were swaying and shimmering with rays of sunshine streaming down creating a rainbow prism. The brilliant bright green colors of the leaves nearly glowed. Her eyes wondered to the tulips sprouting up, as she watched, around the trees everywhere in every color imaginable and they moved like they were dancing in the slight breeze that caressed them.

She walked a few steps and saw a magnificent waterfall and picturesque lake before her, the waters vividly blue, sparkling in the sunlight. Lively fish were seen jumping in unison as if they were playing some sort of synchronized swimming game. A huge white polar bear was feasting on fresh salmon as her cubs were frolicking at the water’s edge.

Gabe walked over to her and took her hand again. “I knew you would love this place. It’s magical Maggie and I have wanted to bring you here for so long.”

She turned to him. “How do you know me Gabe? I mean, I have never seen you before although somehow I feel I do know you, but I can’t place from where.”

“Here, come sit with me and I will try to explain.” He led her to a wooden bench that was nestled in amongst a beautiful flower garden filled with sweet fragrant roses that weren’t there moments before.

“This wonderful place is not of your world, at least not on a physical realm. It is in another dimension and it is where I have lived for several hundred years. In fact, I knew your grandmother when she was a young beautiful woman just as you are right now.”

“My grandmother is dead and has been for many years…Are you some sort of angel and you’re telling me I have died and gone to Heaven?” she laughed, not sure what to believe anymore.

“No…not at all. I’m definitely no angel, however, I am of the spirit world and when your grandmother died, she came to me and asked me to keep an eye out for you. She loved you very much.” He hesitated for a moment. “I have to admit Maggie, that after a while of looking after you, I started feeling things and I found myself wanting to be near you all the time.”

“So what you’re telling me is that you have been talking to my dead grandmother and you’ve basically been stalking me? Is that correct?” She challenged.

“I wouldn’t put it that way, Maggie. I have been watching over you much like a protector would from the spirit world, however, I found myself falling in love with you. I couldn’t resist making myself known to you any longer.” He waited for her reply.

“So that was you in the library tonight? I didn’t see you but I felt someone there.”

“I didn’t want to scare you, so I did not let you see me.” He hoped she would understand.

“But you did, and you scared me in the car too didn’t you, breathing on the back of my neck? I felt you there.” She accused.

“Yes, I… You are so lovely and you smell so good, I couldn’t resist Maggie. I wanted to touch you and breathe in the scent of your hair and you. I admit I shouldn’t have done that.” He looked down sheepishly.

Maggie didn’t know whether to admonish him or fall into this charming, handsome man’s arms. Those blue eyes of his had the power to just melt her heart and cast all of her reserves to the wind. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing that this man was telling her he was enamored with her but it still didn’t explain how all of this was possible.

As if he read her mind, which he could do, he stood up and beckoned her. “Come, let’s walk, and let me show you around this delightful place.”

They got up and walked a little ways to explore. Maggie was just entranced with everything and could not believe there was really a place that existed like this.

“It really is magical; whatever you wish for will appear. If you are hungry, you will have a bountiful feast before you to dine on. Here, try it, Think of something you love to eat. Close your eyes and think about what it is that you want.” He told her.

She closed her eyes and when she opened them again, they were standing beside the lake and there was a picnic setting with an oversized blanket sprawled out before them, filled with gourmet chocolates and all kinds of cheeses, fruits, and delectable pastries along with a bottle of champagne and two glasses.

“But I didn’t think of champagne or the other stuff, just the chocolates.” She said.

He laughed as he led her to the blanket. “I know. That was me. I thought it would compliment your wish.”

They sat down and she tasted one of the chocolates as Gabe poured her a glass of champagne. She didn’t know that something could taste this good. It was exquisite and melted in her mouth and made her taste buds alive. “My God, this is divine.” She purred.

Gabe looked over at her and enjoyed seeing her pleasure. He held out the champagne for her. Her hand brushed his as she took the glass from him. It sent a shock of exhilarating electricity through her body. It was as if a moment in time stopped in that millisecond, for he had felt the powerful connection too.

He looked directly into her eyes, then deliberately and slowly moved towards her and gently kissed her on the lips.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Watching You – Part 5

Maggie’s breath was taken away by Gabe’s kiss as his lips lingered and ever so gently touched hers like a whisper. His lips were softer than she imagined and she found herself wanting more.

Gabe pulled away for a moment. “I’m sorry, I couldn’t help myself.” He said, however, by the dreamy look in Maggie’s eyes he knew it had been okay so he did not regret kissing her.

“No, it was really nice, don’t apologize.” was all she could say. Her mind was thinking all kinds of things and then she realized that he could probably read her thoughts, which made her blush slightly.

“It’s okay Maggie. I feel the same way.” He said. He reached over to get a chocolate truffle and offered it to her.

She nodded and he fed it to her. Everything about this place and him had her senses alive and tingling. It was like every fiber of her being and every cell in her body had wakened up from a deep sleep and was now alive and breathing and vibrant. She had never felt this way in her life.

She watched him as he sipped his champagne and ate a piece of fruit. God, he was gorgeous and he aroused her senses in the way that no man had ever done. She still didn’t understand how all of this was possible and right now in this moment she really didn’t care.

He knew everything she was feeling and it made him happy but he did not want to take advantage of her good nature and if she wanted him she would have to be the one to make a move. He could wait no matter how long it would be. After all, he had been admiring her from afar for a long time and he was ecstatic that she was sitting here beside him in his world. He was amused at her trying not to let him know that she had been watching him intently.

She watched him and wondered what he was thinking. She was pretty sure that he had been able to read her thought and right now she wished she could do the same. How wonderful that would be.

In response, he held his hand up as if he was going to measure the size of his palm against her own delicate soft hand and as he placed his fingertips against each one of her fingertips, she felt a strange sensation moving through her body and in a moment it became clearer what he was doing.

He was allowing her to feel what he was feeling and to know what was in his thoughts. She at once knew and felt the immense depth of his love for her. It was as if their very souls connected and she didn’t realize that a love like this could even be possible. But here she was with this beautiful stranger and she knew that nothing else mattered right now except for this moment in time.

It took her breath away. She moved closer to him as if to kiss him but she leaned forward and whispered in his ear, “Make love to me Gabe.” She already knew the ecstasy they were about to share and she wanted him so bad that she couldn’t see straight.

He took her in his arms and slowly began kissing her face, every sensuous delicate inch of it. He started with her forehead, then moved to her eyelids and her cheeks and then passionately moved to her lips and on down to her neck. His lips were like silk on her body and the floodgates of her passion had been opened.

She almost couldn’t wait any longer. She wanted him inside her right now but he insisted on being slow and deliberate, which only tantalized her even more. Slowly they undressed one another and began the mating ritual of love.

Maggie had never experienced such a sensual pleasure like this in her life. Gabe was gentle and passionate and knew many ways to take her to the edge before the explosive orgasms that rocked her body began and left her with an insatiable quench for more of him.

They made love over and over again until their bodies were spent and could give no more. Maggie lay in Gabe’s arms, which felt warm and strong and safe all at once. She wanted to stay awake and ask so many things about him, however her eyes were drifting closed and after a halfhearted attempt to stay awake she finally gave in to the feeling of drowsiness in the comfort of his arms. There would be plenty of time to ask everything she wanted to know.

The sun’s warm rays were shining down on Maggie’s face and she felt something wet nudge her face, which is what woke her up. She opened her eyes to discover Midnight staring back at her. “What are you doing here?” she asked.

For a moment she was confused. She sat up suddenly and discovered she was back in her own bed at home. She got up and rushed out to the living room and looked around. She didn’t know what she expected to see, as everything was in its place and just as she left it last night.

The Chinese carryout cartons were still on the coffee table and the clock read 8:45. The deadbolt was still intact and there was no sign that anyone else had been in her apartment.
She went back to the bedroom where Midnight meowed at her as if to say, “Aren’t you going to feed me?” She crawled back into bed and gathered the black cat in her arms.

“I wish you could tell me what happened last night, Midnight.” She stroked his head and neck and he adored the attentions and gave out with a loud purring noise, even if she didn’t go get his dish and feed him in her normal routine.

Could last night have really happened? It seemed so real and she remembered how Gabe had made love to her and she felt all those intense feelings that she questioned how it could not have been real. She couldn’t stop thinking about it or about Gabe as she showered and got dressed and she went through her day in a daze.

She had to run some errands in the afternoon so she gathered her keys and headed out. She locked her apartment door and turned in the hallway to go downstairs. She ran smack-dab into Dave nearly knocking him down. “Oh, God! I’m sorry… Are you okay? … I didn’t see you standing there.” She apologized.

“Oh, that’s okay Maggie… no harm done.” He stammered. He would savor those moments that her body had made contact with his even if it was for only a brief second.

She got into her car and started it up. She needed to go pick up her dry cleaning and she wanted to drop by the grocery store and pick up a few things too. On her first stop, she ran into an old college friend at the dry cleaners that she used to be really close to. Julie was her name and they stopped for a brief moment to talk.

“Wow, this is amazing running into you Mags. I just had a dream about you last night.”
Her friend said. “Hey, why don’t you join me for lunch? I’m going over to that new little coffee house that just opened up and I can tell you all about this wild dream.”

Maggie thought for a moment. “You know, I think I will join you, and I had the most amazing dream last night too and I would love to tell you about it. Just let me grab my dry cleaning and we’ll go.” She said.

As Maggie came out of the dry cleaners, she got a quick sensation of somebody watching her. She quickly looked around but saw nobody that looked familiar. She knew she was looking for his face in the crowd; however she did not see him.

She smiled. “That’s okay…. I know you ‘re there….” She whispered to herself as she crossed the street to catch up with her friend.

Watching You- Conclusion

Julie had been one of Maggie’s wild roommates and closet friends in college. She remembered what fun they used to have, going to sorority parties and sneaking out late at night to go check out the latest college hotspots.

Maggie had never been a true party person but Julie was often the one who convinced Maggie to have fun and cast caution to the wind. The two girls had shared some great times together and a lot of secrets during those four years. She wondered now why they had drifted apart.

After graduation Maggie gotten a secure position at the library and had basically settled into her life while Julie on the other hand took off and spent time in Europe. Last she had heard Julie was engaged to a director and living the life among the rich and famous.

Now here she was sitting in a coffee bistro with her friend whom she hadn’t seen in six years. Maggie had changed a lot in the last six years. Maybe it was due to the fact that she had just gotten too comfortable being by herself and living the quiet life of a librarian.

Julie looked great; in fact she still looked the same as she did in college. Maggie was a beautiful woman herself but she wasn’t as outgoing and extroverted as her old pal.

God, I really need to loosen up more, she thought to herself. Well, she had loosened up quite considerably with Gabe. Her thoughts drifted back to the night before and she remembered the way he touched her and kissed her and thinking of him made her flush with heat.

Julie was coming over to the table by the window with her mocha latte and a cappuccino for Maggie. They both ordered a spinach cranberry walnut salad with raspberry vinaigrette with extra goat cheese.

“Is it hot in here? You look a little warm.” She said noticing the color to Maggie’s cheeks.

Maggie shook her head, “No, it’s fine.” and took one of the cups from Julie.

“So Mags…What on earth have you been doing these last few years?” Julie asked as she settled into her seat.

“Oh, you know the same old thing. I’m still at Glenridge working… what about you? What brings you to town, Julie?” Maggie inquired as she took a sip of the delicious coffee. “Didn’t I hear something about you and the hotshot director- what’s his name?”

Julie made a face. ”Oh, you mean James? He was such a prick and I couldn’t stand another minute with him. For all his wealth you would have thought the guy could have bought some lessons in charm and in manners, but he was really just an asshole with a lot of money.” She laughed and rolled her eyes before she continued.

“My brother, you know Ryan, just had a set of twins boys, so I came back to see them.”

“Wow, tell him and his wife congrats for me. Sorry to hear things didn’t work out with James…So how long are you going to be in town for?” Maggie asked as the waitress brought their salads over. They both dug in and started eating and in between bites they continued with their conversation.

“Well, I was actually thinking about moving home again Maggie. I’ve been kind of homesick and with the family growing and Mom and Dad getting older, I wanted to come back at least for a while and I could really use a change of scenery”

“That’s great to hear Jules! Do you have a place to stay yet?” Maggie was glad that her friend was considering sticking around for a while. For as much as Maggie liked her solitary life she had to admit sitting here talking with her old friend was rather nice. Like old times and she realized how much she missed having a close friend.

“Well, I am currently at my parent’s house, but that is not going to last forever, so I was going to try to find something over the next couple weeks or so.” She replied.

Maggie brightened.” Hey, we have an empty in our apartment complex, it’s on the first floor…why don’t you come by and see it. I am pretty sure it’s almost ready for a new tenant and it has big spacious rooms. It would be great having you close by again, Julie.”

Julie thought about it for a moment, “Well it would be better than living with my parents, so yeah, that sounds great!”

Maggie got her phone out. “Here, let me call Dave and I’ll let you talk to him…” She dialed the number and spoke a few words to him, then put Julie on the phone.
Maggie waited a few minutes then Julie handed the phone back to her. “He says I can come by and see it tomorrow and Dave sounds hot… so is he a cutie?”

Maggie laughed and shrugged, “Well, not to me he isn’t but I suppose he is okay looking.”

Julie changed subjects. “Oh, I almost forgot. I had a dream about you last night Maggie!”

“Uh oh! It’s no telling what you were thinking. So what was it about?” she was almost afraid to hear what Julie would say. She tended to have premonition type dreams sometimes. So you never knew what was going to come out of Julie’s mouth.

“Okay… tell me if this makes any sense at all to you. I dreamed you were in a long white flowing gown in a jungle with a lot of animals around you and then you got on a magic carpet and went to the top of a mountain. Then I heard a voice like God talking to you and you got back on the magic carpet and flew off over the ocean…” Julie laughed and waited for a response or reaction from Maggie.

Maggie smiled and said nothing. Julie got a look of surprise on her face. “Oh come on; please tell me it doesn’t make sense, does it?” She inquired with a mischievous look on her face. “Are you holding out on me Mags?” she teased her friend.

Maggie broke down and told her all about the previous night and the magical land, but she told Julie it was a dream. After all she had no proof it was real, and even if it was, she wanted to keep that to herself for now. She didn’t tell Julie exactly everything, especially the intimate details, but enough so that Julie was a bit envious of her mysterious stranger Gabe.

The two women talked and laughed with one another for a while more and caught up on various happenings in each other’s lives. Julie was the first to break up their short lived reunion, saying she needed to get going but promised to stop by Maggie’s place after she looked at the apartment.

Maggie had to admit, she really enjoyed catching up and sharing conversations with her friend. She gathered her cup and her dry cleaning and started to leave. She remembered her purse and turned back sharply to retrieve it and bumped into a man who had already claimed the table because the place was still fairly crowded being new and all.

“Oh, I am so sorry! That is the second time I did that today.” She exclaimed as she looked up into the face of the gentleman.
Seeing him nearly took her breath away. He was the spitting image of Gabe. Same wavy coal black hair and those beautiful crystal blue eyes. She was speechless.

“I…..” she stammered in shock.

He touched her arm gently and said. “No, my fault really. Please accept my apologies madam.” And at that he took her hand and kissed the back of it.

“My name’s Gabby… and you are?” he smiled a brilliant smile that flashed his perfect pearly whites.

“Maggie…. My name is Maggie.” She smiled back at him and knew in her heart that from this day forward her life would never be the same again.

The End

 Watching You-- Parts 1, 2 and 3

Watching you- Part 1

Maggie parked her car at the curb in front of Hilltop Manor, the apartment complex where she lived. It was after ten in the evening and the bone chilling winter winds made the streets seem all the more desolate. Even though she had drove home with the heat on full blast, a chill still went up her spine. She couldn’t shake the feeling that something was not quite right. Call it intuition or whatever, she had the feeling she was being followed.

The feeling started in the library where she was employed and had just completed the late shift on a Friday night. About fifteen minutes before nine she made her rounds putting the last stack of books away when she felt the hairs on her neck stand up. It startled her so much that she spun around sure someone was standing only inches from her, yet when she looked nobody was there. In fact the library was completely empty except for herself and Amanda the part time student who had been hired recently.

Maggie rounded the corner behind the checkout counter and asked Amanda if she saw anyone besides them, in the quiet hallows of the library. The young student looked at her a bit odd as she replied no, and besides she had other things on her mind like, could she please hurry up and let her go because she had a date with Jimmy Barnett who was the absolute cutest guy on the basketball team. Maggie begrudgingly let her go and walked to the door with her so she could lock up as Amanda hurriedly left.

Maggie finished up with some paperwork and closed the computers down and by nine-thirty she was out the door on her way home. She had almost forgotten about the feeling she had of someone watching her in the library until she was driving her little Honda and again she thought for a moment that she felt warm breath on the back of her neck. It gave her an uneasy feeling. She checked the rearview mirror and saw nothing. She knew nobody was in the car with her because she always had the habit of locking the car doors and checking the back seat before she got in. It was a habit well ingrained from her Mother who was constantly watching and fretting over the news of the crime in the city where Maggie resided and reminding Maggie relentlessly to lock her doors, look both ways, and above all wear clean underwear, and on and on…

She decided to drive by the fast food Chinese takeout place for some combo fried rice and an order of wontons, her favorites, that way she wouldn’t have to worry about fixing something to eat when she got home and she could just settle in with a good movie and her takeout. Maggie didn’t have much of a social life. She tended to relish her solitary life and she loved working at the library where it was quiet and calm for the most part.
It wasn’t that she was anti-social; it was more that she just enjoyed her own company and the comfort of a quiet peaceful life.

She was planning to do what she did most Friday nights and that was watching Lifetime movies on the cable channel. Just her and Midnight, her black silky cat, that she took in as a kitten, cuddled up on the couch together, yeah, that was her ideal date night.

By the time she got her order and made her way through the windy streets it was nearing ten o’clock. She pulled into her usual parking spot, which was on the street in front of the three story building in a little suburb of Chicago. She had not seen a car following her but still she had that sixth sense that made her take another quick glance in the mirror before she got out of the car. She gathered her keys and purse along with the carryout carton and hurriedly got out of the car. The light was out again over the stoop, she would have to notify the super about that. She made a mental note to call him in the morning.

He was okay, never really bothered anyone much, Dave was his name and he seemed to be a bit of a loner too, so they got along great. Hilltop Manor was a secure building, which gave her an added sense of security as she got her key ready to unlock the door. She thought she heard footsteps behind her as she walked up the sidewalk and neared the entrance, and as she turned her head slightly to look over her shoulder, she stumbled a bit and dropped her keys.

“Damn!” she exclaimed as she bent down to retrieve them. She saw a shadow out of the corner of her eye as she got her keys and hurried to get to the doorway. She felt panic rising up within her and her hands became clammy as she fumbled to get the right key in the lock. She sensed a darkness coming nearer and it made her heartbeat pulse quicker. She just needed to get inside where it was safe. As she heard the click of the lock a hand reached out from behind her and took hold of the handle.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Watching you- Part 2

“Here let me get that for you.” a deep voice said as he opened the door, nearly causing Maggie’s heart to jump right out of her chest. She turned to face him. Recognition registered and she breathed a sigh of relief.

“Dave, you almost gave me a coronary! What in the world are you doing sneaking up behind women at this time of night?” she inquired as her breathing slowed down and she tried to get her heart rate under control.

Dave looked sheepish and a bit embarrassed, “I didn’t mean to startle you, Maggie, I went to my truck to get my ladder to fix the light over the door. I’m sorry if I frightened you...”

She tried to ease his mind with a halfhearted chuckle. “No, actually I am just glad it was you… I thought…. “ she trailed off. “Did you see anyone else a few minutes ago?” she asked.

“No, I heard a car door and saw that it was you, so I was just going to get the door for you.” He blushed. She nodded and started to say something else but changed her mind.

Secretly, Dave harbored fantasies, sexual ones; about Maggie although he would never tell her that nor would he ever have the courage to ask her out on a date. He was content to keep his little secret and savor these brief stolen moments with her. Later he would replay this in his mind over and over but in his fantasy, he would invite her into his apartment in the basement unit, where she would do a seductive strip tease and lap dance for him driving him wild and then she would surrender and let him have his way with her in every conceivable position possible. Just being near her made him hard and he was thankful she didn’t notice as she stepped past him and went up the stairs to apartment 301.

He got his ladder into position and climbed up to the light socket and tightened the bulb that he had unscrewed earlier in the day. The brief moment with her would fuel the fire for the next several days until he needed a fix again and then he would find some other way to have an encounter with Maggie. He put his ladder away and eased into his apartment quietly as he reached down and touched him self lost in his ecstasy as the closed the door and went inside.

Maggie was glad to be home and relieved it was the weekend where she could unwind and relax, maybe get caught up on some reading or better yet do some projects she had been putting off, like the scrap booking she liked to do but never found the time for.
Midnight jumped up on the counter to nose around the carryout carton and see if it would yield any good things for him, purring as Maggie stroked the length of his back.

“You are such a handsome boy Midnight, but I don’t think you want any of this Chinese food Mister … but I’ll give you your snacks early, how about that?” she picked him up and set him down on the floor. “You know you’re not supposed to be up on this counter top.” She reminded him as if he cared. Not that it would make a difference anyway.

Midnight just gave her an indignant look and strolled into the living room to take his perch up on the back of the couch. She would join him in just a few moments as soon as she traded her work cloths for a pair of worn comfy sweats, her usual at home attire. She quickly changed, grabbed the food and plopped down on the sofa. She flipped the television on and scanned the channels.

“Ah, here we go Midnight, a new movie just started a half hour ago.” Maggie loved the Lifetime Channel and she could always count on a good movie going on about women overcoming great odds over love or revenge, or some sad tragedy where the heroine comes out stronger in the end with lessons learned while you make your way through a whole box of Kleenex, crying through the whole sappy movie. She enjoyed the love stories most of all and the characters who made the true to life renditions seem more real for her. Yes, it was a bit of fantasy and better than her own life, but she relished in the escape while it lasted.

An hour and a half later, with her belly satisfied and Midnight curled up by her side, Maggie could not stop yawning. She realized just how tired she felt from the long week and she didn’t really want to get involved in another two hour movie, so she decided to call it a night. She didn’t even both to clean up her mess; she would do it in the morning when she did her weekly Saturday morning ritual of cleaning the apartment.

Not that anybody would be coming over but still she cleaned her place from top to bottom every Saturday without fail… God forbid if her Mother decided to drop by unannounced and chastise her for having dusty shelves… or better yet cat hair from the “animal” as she called Maggie’s little fur ball. Her Mother wasn’t fond of cats or dogs or anything really in Maggie’s opinion. This is why Maggie got a cat in the first place, just because she could and because her Mother was highly allergic so she didn’t visit much.

Maggie checked the door one last time making sure the deadbolt was secure and flipped the light off as she headed toward the bedroom. She shed her clothes and crawled into her big comfortable queen sized bed and pulled the flannel sheets up as she relaxed her body and breathed a sigh of contentment. It wouldn’t take long for her to fall asleep, it never usually did. Midnight jumped up onto the bed and settled at her feet in his usual nightly spot. Within five minutes Maggie was breathing deeply and was sound asleep.

The clock on the nightstand said 2:25 and Maggie turned over from her side onto her back. She wasn’t usually restless… it must be a full moon or something she thought groggily. A sound caught her attention and she though maybe it was Midnight roaming around. She open one eye to discover Midnight was alert and on the bed beside her, he had obviously heard the sound too because he was looking towards the doorway.

It was probably nothing, being in an apartment building you often heard sounds from the other tenants. She closed her eyes and tried to relax again. Something in the air changed and Maggie felt it instantly. Midnight let out with a hiss. That brought Maggie wide-awake and she opened both of her eyes to see the shadow of a man standing at the foot of her bed. She tried to scream but nothing would come out.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Watching You—Part 3

Maggie couldn’t find her voice for nothing…of all times when she needed it the most, for it to fail her now, she was distraught at the thought that nobody would be able to hear her scream for help.

The figure of the man had not moved an inch. In the darkness of the bedroom with only the glow from her digital clock, he appeared to have an odd cast of light around him. It gave Maggie an uneasy feeling, as did it Midnight too, who hissed and spit again before jumping down and hiding under the bed.

“Do not be afraid, I am not here to hurt you.” The stranger said softly in a slightly peculiar but calm voice.

Thoughts raced through Maggie’s mind- Not here to hurt me? He had broken into her apartment and was standing at the bottom of her bed while she slept, and Oh God, she remembered didn’t have any clothes on…. She pulled the covers up tighter around her neck.

“What do you want? I don’t have a lot of money, if that’s what you are after….” She feared he was after much more, yet he still hadn’t moved from his position.

“I am not here for your money… I have no use for such things in my world.” He leaned in a bit and she was able to see his face clearer. A bewildering sensation came over her as she looked at him. He was rugged looking but in a gentle refined way. Nice solid features with crystal blue eyes and nice full lips. He appeared to be very handsome, with dark long eyelashes and wavy hair black as coal.

What was she doing thinking he was good looking? The man had broken into her home and invaded her space…yet she was having a hard time focusing and concentrating. She wanted answers and then something struck her. “What do you mean your world?” she asked. “Are you a terrorist? “

He laughed, “No, Maggie, I’m not…”

“Well then, who are you and why are you in my home?” she paused, “And how do you know my name?” Maggie was more puzzled than fearful at the moment, but there was something about this stranger that was calming to her too in a vague way. She wondered if she knew him from somewhere.

“I am Gabrielle, but most call me Gabe and no, I guess you would say I am not from around here…I’ve been watching you for a while now.” He smiled as if that explained everything.

Something clicked in Maggie’s mind. “Were you in the library tonight and then followed me home?” she questioned.

“Yes and no” he replied which frustrated and confused Maggie even more.

“Which is it? Yes, you followed me home? Or, yes you were there but didn’t follow me home?” She couldn’t believe she was sitting here in the middle of the night having a conversation with this man who had obviously broken the law and broken into her apartment. So much for having a secure building…”So what is it?”

“Yes, I was there at the library, but not in the sense of your reality.” Gabe replied.

“What the Hell are you talking about?” She was becoming frustrated again. She gave an exasperated sigh. “I want some answers right now.” She demanded.

Gabe extended his right hand towards her. “Come with me, and you will understand everything, I promise.”

Maggie rejected his outstretched hand. “I will not go anywhere with you until you tell me why you are here. What do you want with me, to kidnap me? You don’t even know me!” she exclaimed.

“Oh, Maggie, my dear… I know you very well, and you will just have to trust me when I tell you that if you just take my hand, everything will become clearer to you. Truly, I wish you no harm. I assure you that I am not doing something as sinister as kidnapping you, nor any of those other thoughts you have rambling around in your head.” He smiled and once again offered his hand to her. “Please… Trust me…” He pleaded to her with his mystical, beautiful, eyes.

For reasons she couldn’t explain, it was odd to admit that she wanted to trust him. That was just crazy… he must have gotten to her food and drugged it somehow before she ate it because she had no other way to explain why she would be sitting here still talking to this strange handsome man, nor would it explain why she was going to put some clothes on and go wherever it was that he wanted to take her.

She couldn’t explain it but there was just something about him…like maybe she did know him from somewhere but just couldn’t place it.

“I’ll turn my back so you can get dressed.” He said as he turned away from her.

It struck her odd that she hadn’t told him that, but maybe she did and just didn’t remember. She quickly slid out from her bed and grabbed her clothes from the chair by the bed and dressed hurriedly. “I need to know where we are going.” She said.

“To a magical place…” he said brightly and stepped towards her.

Now, not only was she crazy for going along with his request but he was off his rocker too, she thought. She would play along and see if she could find some answers and maybe along the way she would remember why he seemed so familiar.

He only smiled at her and asked, “Are you ready Maggie?”

She nodded and reached out to take his hand. At the precise moment their hands touched a force of energy and a rush of adrenaline coursed through her body, so much that she had to take a deep breath and close her eyes. The feeling was intense and almost took her breath away.

When the sensation passed she opened her eyes and could not believe what she was seeing. She closed them and reopened them again. Her eyes must be deceiving her. How else would it explain…?

They were outside in a forest filled with beautiful flowers and plants. She could see colorful birds flying through the air and could hear a waterfall nearby. The colors of everything were not only beautiful but vibrant and almost like they were alive and breathing. In fact, if she looked closely enough she would see the unfolding of flowers in bloom as they spoke. This was indeed a magical place.

Maggie was overwhelmed with emotion at the mystical beauty around her. “Where are we?” she asked still in awe at her surroundings.

Gabe chuckled, “Welcome to my home, Maggie.”
